Calling All Geniuses!

The Australian curriculum has changed dramatically over the past decade. As a parent of children ranging in age from 7 to 19, I have noticed a significant increase in the volume of content being taught and I have noticed a reduction in the age at which much of the content is being taught. I have also noticed that content is much more prescribed now than it was when my older children were in primary school.
Our whole family would get involved when our children were studying a unit about dinosaurs or Australian native animals or farms, etc. We took family day trips that enriched our children's classroom learning, we loved accompanying them on excursions and getting to know their classmates better. Our children's curiosity was peaked by content that aligned with their interests.
One amazing way to encourage children's natural curiosity in the classroom is through the implementation of Genius Hour where students propose a project that is either a topic they would like to enquire about or a project they would like to create.
The three basic rules for Genius Hour projects are:
1. The question/proposal needs to be something the students cannot resolve easily in a few minutes.
2. The materials need to be able to be accessed.
3. The projects will be presented.
