As today is International Day of the Girl Child, lets take a moment to consider the situation for girls around the world.

Here in Australia, most girls have access to basic health care and education and in many countries around the world this is also the case, but in developing nations or in places that have been impacted by natural disasters or conflict, girls are particularly effected.

October 11th has been recognised as International Day of the Girl Child since 2012.

Girls have the right to be safe, educated and healthy, but around the world there are millions of girls not in school. Some of the poorest countries in the world have the highest rates of girls not receiving an education.

Many families can not afford the cost of education and will choose to invest in education for their sons rather than their daughters. Some girls have to walk long distances in dangerous conditions to get to school and many do not have access to teachers or books.

These girls could grow up to be scientists, doctors, educators, artists, leaders, anything they could dream of being, but they need education to grow up empowered to create bright futures for themselves.
